In Unit one of my newly developed curricula, I wanted to focus specifically on the past. The Harlem Renaissance being a pivotal moment of not only black American creativity and artistry, but also American culture felt like a great focus to center this unit around. This unit highlights the historic city of Harlem and its significance to bringing black creatives together during the Harlem renaissance period. I was also able to highlight Afrocentricity with the introduction of artist of this period in conjunction with contemporary black artist of today. Each lesson in this unit is accompanied by a handout that facilitates classroom discussion centering each artist, their work, and mini creative exercises that help students get into the mind frame for beginning their creations.
